Why We Make Canvas Bags: The Bomba Story
Share
There's a reason canvas has been used to make bags, sails and tents for centuries. It's tough, it's honest, and it gets better with age. At Bomba, it's the material we keep coming back to — and it's the foundation of almost everything we make in our Cape Town studio.
But we didn't choose canvas just because it's practical. We chose it because it tells a story.
What is canvas, exactly?
Canvas is a heavy-duty woven fabric, traditionally made from cotton or linen. The tightly woven structure makes it naturally strong and resistant to wear — which is why it's been a go-to material for everything from artists' paintings to military equipment for hundreds of years.
At Bomba, we use waxed and unwaxed cotton canvas, paired with genuine leather trims and hardware. The combination gives our bags structure where they need it, softness where it matters, and a look that sits somewhere between rugged and refined.
Why canvas works so well for bags
A good bag needs to do a lot. It needs to hold its shape, survive daily use, handle the occasional downpour, and still look good after years of being thrown in car boots and overhead lockers. Canvas does all of this.
Unlike synthetic materials, canvas breathes. Unlike cheap nylon, it develops a patina over time — softening, darkening slightly in the creases, becoming uniquely yours. A canvas bag that's been well used looks lived-in in the best possible way.
It's also a material that takes craftsmanship well. You can stitch it cleanly, shape it precisely, and combine it with leather in ways that feel considered rather than thrown together. That matters to us.
The bags we make
Every Bomba bag starts with the same question: what does this person actually need to carry, and how can we make that as beautiful as possible?
The Betty is our most-loved everyday tote — a large canvas and leather bag built for real life. Spacious enough for laptops, gym kits and everything in between, structured enough to hold its shape on the commute. The Betty comes in multiple colours and has become something of a signature piece for us. It's the bag we see most often on the streets of Cape Town, and that never gets old.
The Kerala is for the woman who wants something a little more considered. A structured canvas and leather handbag with clean lines and leather trim, it sits beautifully on the shoulder or in the crook of an arm. Elegant without trying too hard — practical without sacrificing anything.
The Andes is our canvas duffel bag — the one that goes on adventures. Built for weekend trips, bush breaks and carry-on travel, it's roomy enough to pack properly and tough enough to handle whatever comes next. The Andes has become a favourite among travellers who want a bag that looks as good at the lodge as it does at the airport.
Made by hand in Cape Town
Every one of these bags is made by hand in our studio at Salt Circle Arcade in Cape Town. That means each one is cut, stitched and finished by a person — not a machine — and checked before it leaves us.
We're not a fast fashion brand. We don't make thousands of units and hope for the best. We make bags we'd want to own ourselves, from materials we believe in, in a city we love.
Canvas is part of that. It's a material with integrity — one that rewards quality construction and gets better the more you use it. It suits Cape Town, somehow. Unpretentious, built for the outdoors, quietly beautiful.
A canvas bag that lasts
One of the things we hear most from Bomba customers is that their bag has lasted years — through moves, trips, jobs and seasons. That's not an accident. Canvas, when it's well made and properly cared for, is one of the most durable materials you can buy.
We think that matters. In a world full of bags that fall apart after a season, there's something worth celebrating about a bag that just keeps going.
If you're looking for a canvas bag made in South Africa — one that's handmade, built to last, and designed to be used every day — you're in the right place.
